Jack Pavia posted a condolence
Saturday, December 26, 2020
My name is Jack Pavia. This man cut my entire family's hair for nearly 50 years. I've been getting my haircut there since I was 2 years old and I could get a haircut. I have known the man my entire life, and now that I'm 16 I have the hindsight to look back on the people that influenced me most in my life and thank them for what they contributed. Tommy was a shining example of what it meant to be a good person. He was generous, always trying to return a partial amount of pay my mom gave to him when getting me a haircut. He worked hard, keeping a small business alive for over half a century. He was friendly, always asking me how my life was going and how school was and how much I've grown. It makes me incredibly sad to see the business close just a year after his passing amidst this terrible pandemic. While the business is no longer here, and the people at it have been relocated, the memories I will keep forever. I will pass them on to my kids and hold onto them until I myself am the subject of a similar obituary. He was my barber, but his legacy goes far beyond that label. He was family. Love you, Tommy.

Tom was forever a true gentleman. As much of a master barber as he was a wonderful storyteller, he had such compassion and always made sure everyone was taken care of. If not, he would go out of his way to make sure they were. His stories of “old time Westport” would mesmerize me, and no sooner than I realized, the time would fly by and he would be finished cutting my hair. Tom was a Westport institution. After almost 60 years of starting his business, he touched so many people’s lives. I am fortunate to have been one of them. Rest in peace, Tom. You will be missed.

Who can measure this man? Spoke with everyone, hand on your shoulder. A private entrepreneur in a Big Box world. Loved his work; loved the people he worked with; had the common touch, even with the rich and famous. And worked until he could not work any longer. A mensch. Bye, Tom. A part of our world has fallen.

The nicest and kindest (non-family member) man I’ve ever known has passed away. As the owner of Westport’s Compo Barbershop for 58 years, he cut the hair of many celebrities, and more importantly, he was the only barber in the world for several generations of families, including mine. He was my barber for 25 years, and a cherished, beloved friend for every one of those years. He gave all three of my sons their first haircuts, and indeed, their ONLY haircuts through their high school years and beyond.
It’s not overstating it to say that he was like a second father to me, and a grandfatherly figure to my boys. They raced to Tommy to share accomplishments, accolades, and other triumphant moments, often showing videos, trophies and more. I even dedicated my board book Hairy Henry to Tommy, with the inscription, “To Tommy Ghianuly, who touches our hearts as he cuts our hair.” No truer words were ever written.
The boys and I tried to spend time with him two weeks ago, but he was hospitalized and not able to see us.
I wasn’t blessed with a lot of hair, but I sure was blessed with a quarter-century of unforgettable friendship. And I give Tommy a world of credit for helping to shape Andrew, Nathan and David into the uniquely compassionate people they are.
Carolyn, we’ve never met, but we all send our love and deepest compassion.
Rest in peace, Tommy. God, did we all love that man.

Our deepest and most sincere condolences to Carolyn and her entire family.
Carolyn, we know how much Tommy loved you. Through the years, I had extensive conversations with Tommy with him telling me what a wonderful wife and partner in life you are.
Needless to tell you, how many people loved Tommy. He wasn't just our barber, he was our friend in every way, evidenced by you and Tommy coming to Deb's and my wedding over 30 years ago.
His employees also loved him very much. He was not their boss, he was their big brother and friend.
I could go on and on and tell you stories about our friendship and love for each other over the course of 50 years. When I said my prayers yesterday, I talked to Tommy, and we will continue our conversation forever.
Our warmest condolences to everyone who loved Tommy. We will all miss him and will never forget his smiling face.
Unfortunately, we could not make the service as we are out of town for a few weeks.

Dear Ghianuly family it is hard to explain how much I learned from Tommy through the years we worked together. The way he handled people in business and in person. You can tell how much he touched all by the way that I saw the genuine feelings they had for Tom. I witnessed it through the years we worked together.
When I left Compo barber shop for the reasons I explained to Tommy we were both sad but he understood and was so supportive that he told me to leave some business cards on his counter so he can tell the clients that asked for me where they could find me. I remembered one of the other barbers ( JIM ) tell me that a client had come and asked Tommy where is the fellow with the mustache and he told him that I was down the street in my barber shop and he said he would take someone else and Tom said he is not that far and that Tom was about to give him a ride in his car and bring him to me, then Jimmy Deneen said to me, what's with you and Tom and we all had a laugh. we had many a good time together.
Carolyn, if there is anything I can do for you, please call me any time. We will miss Tommy and I am a better person because of my good friend Tommy haircuts.

Our deepest condolences to the Ghianuly family. My dad Mike Pettee moved to Westport in 1958 and lived there until he passed away in 2013. Tommy cut my dad's hair ever since Compo Barbers in Compo Center first opened until his death in 2013. In those 50+ years in Tommy's chair, life was never tired, never weary and always full of both promise and challenge for the both of them.

My son, Sam, and I started coming to Compo Barber Shop twenty years ago. What a pleasure it was. The shop is a throwback to days long gone by where you were greeted when you walked in the door. The shop is filled with old photos of Westport and has a real, historical barber shop feel to it. You can always depend on interesting conversations taking place there.
Sam was about five when he received his first haircut from Tommy, who called him one of his kids who he'd seen grow up over the years. Sam used to love to pick up the broom in the back of the shop and come out front to sweep up the hair on the floor by the barber chairs while he was waiting his turn for a haircut. Throughout college and now that he's working, Sam would always wait to get a haircut when he was back in town so that he could visit Tommy.
He was a good man who cared deeply about his own family and his extensive barber shop family. We will miss him tremendously.

My sincere condolences to Carolyn on the passing of her husband Tommy.
I met Tommy in 1971 when my husband Tony began cutting hair at Compo. Tommy was a class act, a truly kind gentleman who loved his craft, cutting hair & listening & sharing stories with his clients. He was kind, respectful & loved by all who knew him.
When my husband decided to open his own barber shop 17 years later Tommy wished him well & even months after sent clients of Tonys’ to his new location. That was the kind of man he was.
Three years ago when my husband closed his barber shop after 27 years he went back to Compo. He & Tommy had an understanding that if Tony ever wanted to return he was welcome to do so.
He also told Tony that he would like him to cut hair from the original chair he used years ago.
Tommy will forever be remembered as an easygoing, thoughtful man who was admired by all.

Westport and I have lost one of life's greatest pleasures, going to Compo Barber Shop and be enthusiastically greeted with a warm smile from Tommy using whatever nickname he bestowed upon you over the years.
