Dear Jim and the whole Casey family: It is always difficult to have a loved one die. May you all be surrounded by the memories of Mary Agnes' graceful goodness. The world is a better place because of her kindness, love and compassion.

I didn’t know Mary well - in truth, there was a 35 year gap in our friendship. You see, she was the mother of my very first college roommate, dear Sheila. And by “roommate”, I mean we shared the same room. With 2 narrow beds pushed against the walls and just a few feet between us every night. I was so far from home, scared, anxious, unsure of myself, trying to front like I had all the confidence in the world when I decidedly did not. This was well before cell phones, the internet, social media, FaceTime, Zoom, Skype. And I was stricken with longing for home, holding on for dear life. We didn’t have the money for me to fly home for every holiday - and that included the first break of that first year, Thanksgiving. But you know who did live nearby? The ebullient Casey family - a big, rollicking, exuberant clan that welcomed me into their warm embrace without a second thought. They don’t know it, but those simple acts of kindness that year (and the many that followed thereafter), laced with such generosity of spirit, got me through not only year 1, but years 2, 3, and 4, as well. And it was Mary who set that tone, who inspired and nurtured the same kindness, warmth, and generosity in her children, who then passed it on to their children, and onward and outward into the world. I didn’t know her well, no I did not, but I do remember. I remember what she did for me and how much it meant to me (and trust me, I don’t remember much - especially not scenes from 30+ years ago). In a world severely lacking in good faith and selflessness, Mary was someone who always held the line. I admire and respect that far more than the resume-filler accomplishments we like to crow about as a society. Mary was a real one. And I’m so sad that she’s lost to the world. The best we can do by her is to be more LIKE her. And I will keep that thought in my heart as I continue thrashing about in this world. She was an inspiration. And she will be missed by all who came into contact with her, whether briefly or for a lifetime.

Mary was a light to others during her years at Saint Ann’s. I will always remember her kindness to my mom when she was battling cancer in the 80s and the joyful fellowship She shared with her and my dad at the prayer group and social concerns committee. May God hold the family in his hand and comfort them.

Mary,
I had the privilege of teaching several of your children at St. Ann in the early seventies. I also coached Mike and Pit in basketball at St. Ann. My sincere prayers are with the Casey and Giblin families at this time. Fond memories will last forever.
Mister P (Stephen Pavlich)
