I just found out about this by reading it in the paper, 2 months late. I sat next to Chris in the SHU office when I worked with her about 12 years ago. We kept in touch and I was part of the 4 of us who had brunch periodically. I was determined to keep Chris in my life because she's one of the special ones you never want to lose. Kind, never said a bad word about anyone and the gentlest, most beautiful soul. I loved her dearly. I am sending my sincere condolences to you, her family, because I don't know what you will do without her. I will pray for you.

Last March:
There was always a small bowl of candies on her desk ledge. On my way to class, I’d reach in the bowl for a piece.
“Thanks, Christine.”
“You’re always welcome,” she'd say, smiling.
Not so long ago:
I’d plop in a chair in front of her desk and sigh.
“Hi, Sandy,” she’d say, before even looking up from her desk.
A long time ago:
The elevator doors opened. The wheels of her cart clunked over the gap between spaces. Christine turned the cart sharply to the right and aimed it toward our office. Smiling, she navigated the cart over another bit of a lip, linoleum ceded to all-weather carpet.
The cart was loaded with folders and pencils: the apparatus of placement. A clipboard. Maybe other stuff. But what caught my eye was a box of very large red rubber bands. Very large red rubber bands. The biggest rubber bands I’d ever seen. Forget about placement, how do I get my hands on a box of very large red rubber bands.
“Where did you get those rubber bands? They would be perfect around my class folders,” I gushed.
She looked at me and without a blink, reached into the box, pulled out a handful, and gave them to me.
I have one remaining very large red rubber band.

I worked closely with Chris on many projects at Sacred Heart University. She was truly a one of a kind person. Such a genuine kind soul. Anyone that knew her loved her. She will be greatly missed by all.

Christine was the first person I met at Sacred Heart, in 2013, when I interviewed for the job I currently hold teaching in the English department. She sat in her desk outside of the offices of Mike Bozzone and Michelle Loris, where I waited to interview with Michelle. It was a hot day in July, near 100 degrees, and I was already jittery about a big interview. And she was so kind and caring. She gave me a cold drink, and then told me about her daughter who had gone to SHU. And she then told me about another professor in the English department whose daughter was going to attend in the Fall. While I waited, a student came in who was very distraught about something, and she gave the student a chair and comforted her, and told her everything would be ok, and that Dean Bozzone was certain to help her out. Now, I had already received an offer from another school; but after talking with Christine, and then witnessing how she was able to soothe a distraught student--and then introduce her to Mike Bozzone with words of motherly concern--I decided that I wanted to spend my academic career HERE. It epitomized for me the values I yearned for in higher education. Ever since that day, I would stop down to talk to Christine before I left for the day. Christine is a wonderful person.

Christine was one of the first people I met at SHU. She was, and always kind and generous with her interactions with me and all who knew her. She is a special person who positively touched all of our lives. She has left a legacy of generosity, kindness, caring, and love for all of us who knew her. In speaking with friends about her tragic passing, we've all realized we all are better people for having known Christina, and she will be missed by us all. I'm sure she will be greeting, organizing, and helping all of those in the afterlife as she has done here on earth. You're a special person, and you're not gone, because you will always be alive in our hearts. In Loving memory, Cynthia Conte
