Obituary of Alice Kliemand Meyer

Alice Virginia Kliemand Meyer, age 96, of Easton, devoted wife of the late Theodore H. Meyer and retired State Representative for Connecticut, passed away on May 12, 2017. Alice's memory will be embraced by her two sons, Robert Meyer and his wife Pam, of Wilton, John Meyer, of New York City and Easton; three grandchildren, Daniel and Shaina Meyer of Wilton and Carolyn Meyer of Minneapolis, MN; one sister in law, Charlotte Martin, of Raleigh, NC; a number of nieces and nephews; many dear family friends and neighbors. The daughter to the late Martin and Marguerite Houze Kleimand, Alice was born and raised in New York City. She graduated from Barnard College with her bachelor degree, Columbia University with her master degree, and was later honored with a Doctorate from Briarwood College for her commitment to statewide educational advancements while on the Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education. Alice taught in New York and New Jersey and later as a substitute teacher for the Easton school system. She possessed a strong desire to help her community, those in need, and ultimately, residents of the State of Connecticut. She was active in Easton town politics and was elected in 1976 as state representative for the 135th district including Easton, Weston, Westport and later Newtown. She served on a number of state councils and committees and was assistant minority leader when she retired in 1993. She served in leadership roles for numerous community and non profit organization boards throughout her life including the Discovery Museum, the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women, and the National Order of Women Legislators. She was also a supporting member of the United Congregational Church of Bridgeport. Alice's greatest joy was found in time spent with her beloved husband, children, and grandchildren. A longtime member of Black Rock Yacht Club, she enjoyed swimming and sailing on Long Island Sound with her family. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling with friends and family. Alice will be remembered for her love of family, friends, and community. Friends may greet her family on May 25th, Thursday from 10 to 11 AM in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. At 11 AM, the Reverend Sara Smith, Esq. will officiate her service in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Easton.
