Mioara Naum Obituary

Mioara Naum, 88 (nee Giualmla), also known as Miorita, of New Haven, CT, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2024.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Mioara lost her father, a Romanian diplomat, at a young age. She was raised in Bucharest, Romania, by her single mother and surrounded by the love of her relatives. After completing her education in Engineering Design, Mioara married Dr. Daniel Naum, a pediatrician, with whom she shared a harmonious life. In 1956, they welcomed their only beloved son, Ionut. Mioara worked throughout her career in Hydrotechnique Engineering Design in Bucharest, where she was a highly sought-after designer. Mioara moved to the United States in 1977 after her husband and son defected from the communist regime in Romania. Initially, the regime did not allow her to join them and even prosecuted her. It was only after Daniel's dramatic hunger strike in Washington, DC, that the Romanian government permitted Mioara to reunite with her family in the US. They were finally together in 1977, beginning a new chapter of their lives as proud American citizens. The family faced many challenges in their new country. Mioara worked hard to support them while Daniel studied and passed his Medical Doctor exams, and Ionut completed his education in Information Technology. Over time, they overcame these hurdles: Daniel became a respected physician, and Ionut started his career in computer programming in California after getting married. Tragedy struck again in the early 1980s when Mioara's beloved son, Ionut, died in a car accident. She barely survived this painful loss, relying on her strong character, the support of her church, and the love of devoted friends. Mioara also endured the loss of her cherished husband, Daniel, in 2016.
