Oguz was an important mentor to me. He was my first manager out of grad school and really taught me what it was to solve hard real world problems. He also fostered a team culture that felt more like a family. The lessons I learned from him still form the basis for how I approach my work all these years later and how I mentor my team. He was truly a special person and is missed.

Our family was blessed with the opportunity to meet, spend quality time, and make impactful, memorable memories with Oz and Nevin.
Oz held many admirable attributes and traits, including his high intellect and wisdom, warm hospitality and humble generosity, and great, witty, and positive sense of humor. He also was exemplary of tremendous strength to endure.
We express our sincere condolences and sympathies to Oz’ family and friends. We are grateful to have known him and he will forever be in our hearts and memories.

Atatürk said "Özgürlük ve bağımsızlık benim kişiliğimdir." This can be translated to English as "Freedom and independence is my character." My brother was a free and independent man. He knew where he came from, where he stood and where he was heading to. He was sharp and honest. He could detect bullshit immediately and he did not like bullshitters. He had principles. He always told the truth and not what others wished to hear. ... And he was my little brother. I shared a sleeping room with him for twenty years. I remember how he used to throw the blanket away, how my father came and covered him with the blanket and how he again threw the blanket away. I remember how we started a fire at our living room when we were playing with a Bunsen burner and how he ran to the bath room to get some water shouting "da dii da dii" pretending to be a fire fighting machine. He had a lot to give to this world and a lot to take from it. An absurdly early death. But I accept it as it is. That is what he would like me to do. He did not like bullshit.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Oguz for over 12 years. Over that time, I found him to be a man of great principle, pragmatism, and integrity. He was always deserving of the utmost respect.
Oguz always retained his intellectual desire and appetite for rational inquiry. He was always excited to hear about something new - to take an idea apart and put it back together again.
Looking back, when I first met Oguz, I found him confusingly both charming and cantankerous. As I got to know him, I realized that this made him such an effective and influential mentor to others. He was gracious with his time and would make great efforts to explain ideas to others in a way they could easily grasp. Nevertheless, he expected those around him to share his virtues and wanted those under his guidance to be their best - work hard, be creative, and think critically. Everyone who worked for or with him came out better as a result.
I will miss Oguz greatly as a former colleague, a mentor and as a friend. Yet, I am comforted by the fact that his intellect, accomplishments, and positive impact on those who worked with him will endure.

Oguz and I had offices next to each other for several years, and some of my favorites moments at work were taking a break to chat with him about the latest woodworking and home improvement projects, hobbies we both shared.
He was a true talent in many areas and will be greatly missed - my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

When I started at Graham, one of the highlights of my week was when Oguz would come out to the main floor on Friday afternoons to shoot the breeze with us junior researchers. He always had great stories and tremendous sense of humor.
He was also a first class quant and often had very helpful tips for me in researching my models and ideas. He is greatly missed.

When I interviewed for a job at GCM 15 years ago, Oguz was one of my interviewers. We found agreement on many aspects of quant modeling, except for my use of neural networks as a part of my strategy: “these models are too over-parametrized, there isn’t enough signal-to-noise ratio in financial data to make them work,” he opined. I still got the job (thanks Oguz), and a few years later, Oguz was proved right when I analyzed live trading data and concluded that my neural networks indeed weren’t adding value and removed them. Fast forward a few years, it was Oguz who pushed his team to use neural networks, now in the context of natural language processing, culminating in a successful news sentiment trading signal. This epitomizes Oguz as a quant researcher: always intellectually honest, and always intellectually curious. When we were trying to evolve trend-following models into the third generation, Oguz built the first adaptive model from his engineering toolbox. When we needed a value signal to complement other components in a new investment product, Oguz took on the project and delivered the results. I am saddened to lose a colleague and top-notch researcher, but Oguz will be fondly remembered through his integrity, work ethic and ingenuity.

We were sisters and brothers. Fate brought us together from the age of 6 to 11. At that age it was our initial contact with other humans outside the family. It was precious, so innocent, beautiful to meet such people that you will never forget through your life. It is so easy to imagine them right beside you anytime. Oguz is our first one to travel to the next world. In the end we will all get there somehow. He was special kind. A little reserved but also honest and trusted. That period of my life was beautiful and Oguz and all were a big part. Farewell my old buddy.
