Obituary of Peggy Barton
Please share a memory of Peggy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Margaret (Peggy) Streifler Barton died peacefully on February 11, 2024, at age 89.
Peggy was a longtime resident of Westport and Weston, having first moved to Westport in 1963. Born and raised in Kew Gardens, Queens, Peggy graduated from Barnard College in 1955 after transferring there from Connecticut College to be closer to her future husband, orthopedic surgeon Jerry Barton. Peggy furthered her education at NYU, where she earned a master's degree in Early Education, and later at the N.Y. School of Interior Design. She taught kindergarten in the New York City public school system, chaired Big Brother/Big Sister of Westport, volunteered in the Weston schools, co-founded and spent many years with Quintessence Interiors, and later worked as a travel consultant.
Peggy was a devoted wife, a loving and supportive mother, and an adoring grandmother and great-grandmother. She was vivacious, fun-loving, and had abundant energy. Peggy was a graceful skier and a fiercely competitive tennis and paddle tennis player, excelling in competitions at the Weston Field Club and Aspetuck Valley Country Club. Her tee shot was down the middle of the fairway every time. She loved spending time with Jerry at their home in Arizona and especially sharing that time with family, which always came first for her.
She is survived by Jerry, her beloved husband of 68 years; daughter Cathy Zales (Steve) and son John Barton (Lisa); grandchildren Scott Zales (Diana), Greg Zales (Mackenzie), Graham Barton, and Lucy Barton; and great-granddaughter Delaney Zales. We will miss her tremendously and love her always.
All services will be held privately. Memorial contributions in Peggy's name may be made to Hospice at RVNA in Ridgefield, CT, www.rvnahealth.org.
