Obituary of Margaret Capone

Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Margaret M. Capone of Fairfield, CT 93, passed away peacefully on January 26.2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Margaret was born in 1930 in Nanticoke, PA, to the late Sarah and John Hermanofski. She grew up with her brother Joseph and sister Elizabeth fondly called Betty in an area she affectionately referred to as the "coal region". Margaret graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1948, where she was captain of the cheerleading team and proudly designed their squad uniforms. After high school graduation, Margaret headed to Philadelphia, where she attended Mt. Sinai School of Nursing in Philadelphia. Upon graduation, Marge, as she was known, worked as head nurse at the Albert Einstein Hospital.

At this time, Marge spent weekends at the New Jersey shore, where she met a young man in Wildwood who challenged her to a game of basketball. Little did he know Marge was an excellent player herself. Marge won the game and the affection of James Capone, who was in his last year at Penn State University on a GI Bill.

Jim and Marge were married in 1957. Jim's career in television led the growing family to the suburbs of Philadelphia, where they raised four daughters (and four female dogs) in King of Prussia.  Marge and Jim's passion for auctions led to her love affair of all things collectible, that inspired her to go into business with a little antique shop called the Cellar.

In 1978, Jim's career took him to Timex and the family to Cheshire, CT where Marge was an active member in the Garden Club and PTA, as well as an avid tennis player. She enjoyed vacationing at the shore, playing poker, and dancing the polka. Marge's continued interest in antiques and collectibles led her to open a shop called Watercress Springs located on a watercress brook. Their Cheshire home was the focus of many fun-filled, love-filled events for over 30 years, thanks to Marge's welcoming and beautiful aesthetic touch. In 2011, Marge and her husband Jim moved to Fairfield, CT, to be closer to their four daughters, where they enjoyed the coastal life with their family and friends.

Margaret is survived by her four daughters and extended family; Lisa Capone of NYC, Angela Capone Rauscher and her husband Bob of Fairfield, Maria Capone Kivi and her husband Hillar of Westport, Granddaughter Pamela Elise Kivi of NYC, Pamela Capone LaManna and husband Vincent and her four step children Justine, Vincent Jr., Iggy and Leanna. Margaret was pre-deceased by her husband, James, in 2015.

A very beloved mother, Margaret will always be remembered for the empathy and compassion she showed to others throughout her life. "We'll be seeing her shining light in all the old familiar places…always and forever".

Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony's of Padua Church in Fairfield at 11 am on Friday, February 2, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Margaret's favorite charity. Should you wish to send flowers, they can go to Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 149 S Pine Creek Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
