Soul-food/Food for thought.
Whether he was preparing the seasoned salmon or chicken liver pâté, Byron spoke with great passion about the love he had for food. With his warm voice and a twinkle in his eye, Byron would share step by step his secret love with all of us. It came from his soul, and I have no doubt he invented the word “soul food”. I will remember Byron as a storyteller. During one of my visits two decades ago, Byron gave me a gift I treasure to this day. A tea-cup with a print from Picasso on it. He did not just hand it to me, it came with a story. He shared his knowledge on how to prepare green tea, and we also exchanged our thoughts on art and Picasso. As I was an art student once, he had carefully selected the gift. This cup became the art of tea! To this day this cup it is still my favorite tea cup and it is always half full. Each sip of tea I drink from this cup I can feel the warmth of Byron and I hear his voice. Byron will always remain with us, through the food we eat and the stories we share. His life was as colorful as this tea-cup and never half empty.

As the former AARP CT Senior Program Specialist for Volunteer Engagement, I will always remember the good fortune of Byron attending an AARP “You’ve Earned a Say” event where Byron was a stand out and was appointed as a volunteer shortly thereafter. Byron represented the brand with professionalism, knowledge, and passion – not to mention his affability and sense of humor. I felt privileged to have Byron‘s leadership on the volunteer team in a variety of roles.
A supreme contributor – and now a great loss..
Appreciatively @ with Sadness,
Elaine Werner

Byron was that special, dynamic person who enriched our lives - and now that he is gone, we realize what a void he left behind. If you ever heard him sing "Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)" in church on Good Friday, you would know what I mean. There will never be anyone quite like Byron and I'm so glad I knew him.

Byron was the first person I met hen visiting St. Paul’s “Join me at coffee hour. Oh, you sing? Wow we would love for you to join our choir!”. The love that Byron and Jane share is a light that has guided me throughout my life. Byron, I will miss you terribly, but know you are getting the choir together in heaven. Deepest condolences to all family members and friends of Byron.

I am so sorry to learn of Byron's passing. I was rector 1974-1987, and remember when Byron, Jane and their children arrived. I have never known when Byron wasn't involved deeply in his faith and service to the Lord and the church in so many ways. We remember when he and at least one of the children were active--and very good at it--in The Church Street Players, led by Carlynn. Personally, among all these blessings, I am grateful to have such a big pile of great memories of Byron which I will continue to carry with love and gratitude. Dear brother, rest in peace and rise in glory!!
Rev'd Dr. David Reed

We were so sad to hear of Byron’s passing. What a wonderful man! We are blessed to know the entire Peterson family through sports at Shelton High School. Liz and Becca were excellent players on the girls basketball team, our fortunate connection to this wonderful family. Byron and Jane were enthusiastic fans and tremendous supporters of all the sports programs. Byron was a proud and loving father and husband, and we’re sure now was in his relationship with his extended family. He and Jane were an example of love in action to their family and friends. His loss will be felt by all who knew and loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Peterson family. Howard and Judy Gura

I love you always Mr. Peterson. As you always sang so joyfully Prepare Ye The Way of The Lord. Remember when you and mom were on Vestry and had to call each other all the time because there was no texting back then and my dad said he thought you guys were having an affair? lol. Until we meet again. Rest in Peace at our Heavenly Home.

Byron, a true gentleman, the most glowing example of a life well lived. No one exemplified love for family, love for his wife, Jane, and a hearty, happy love for everything in life as Byron did. He will truly remain an inspiration to all who had the good luck to have shared even brief moments of his time.

I absolutely loved the smell of Mr Peterson's pipe. I will forever be grateful for passing you and Jane in the airport after your knee surgery and having a moment to hug and share your love!
You still smelled like that pipe!
Thank you for your family and being one of the first families to open your home to my sister and I.
Your loving example of a father and as a husband never went unnoticed.
God bless you all in your time of grief.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bryon on several occasions, always at happy family events. He was so kind and friendly - genuinely interested in what you had to say and making you feel invited. I remember him asking me to come sit with him and his wife at his granddaughters wedding so I wouldn't have to sit by myself. Such a kind gesture that I think about often. I'm sure many many people have similar stories to tell in regards to him. My deepest sympathies to the whole family.

I met Byron when I started volunteering at AARPCT almost 10 years ago…and what a gift that turned out to be! I joined the Executive Board when Byron was our president and learned so much from him throughout the years. Byron was a gentle teacher; always ready to help Nora and AARPCT and any volunteer in any way he was needed; he was kind, smart, always ready with a smile, and just a gem of a person. He will be so missed by so many. We’ve all lost one of the best.

Dear Jane and family - I'm so very sorry to read of Byron's passing. I was blessed to have him as my boss & mentor at Branson from 1998 till he retired. I can honestly say that he was an absolute joy to work for; always fair and such a gentleman, always smiling with a laugh that reverberated through a room. When he wasn't discussing business at hand, his favorite topic was his family. Such wonderful stories that went back as far as your dating years! He was so very proud of his children and their accomplishments and gushed when he spoke of his grandchildren. There are few people that leave lasting impressions on your life and I'm fortunate that Byron was one of those people in my life. May your sweet memories sustain you as you grieve his passing.

Jane and Family,
Words cannot adequately express my sorrow and sadness at Byron's passing. He always had a smile and a wry comment that put everyone at ease, a smile on your face and a chuckle for his wit. Patient, kind and generous with his time as an AARP CT volunteer, which is how I came to know him, he was a great grand mentor, wonderful co-presenter and a great charmer with his self depreciating humor and stories. He was also a great listener, and as a recipient of some powerful insightful feedback, I'll especially miss being able to have a chat, leaving felt heard and seen, and definitely better informed.
Byron was so proud of his family and his heritage. He spoke often of your accomplishments and who you were as individuals making your way in this world.
The world seems smaller without him in it, but I feel enhanced having had the experience of knowing him and walking with him for a bit on his life journey. May peace be upon you all.
Ta,
T

Jane & Family....on behalf of the AARP family that Byron was such a big part of, our condolences. Byron was kind, funny, smart, reliable, trustworthy & generous. He was such a huge help to us, and he was a friend. We will all miss him...there are not that many volunteers who get the nick name "Prince Charming". I think that says it all.
With sympathy & love,
Nora

Jane and family: My deepest condolences to you and your family. Byron (Prince Charming as he was known to many AARP volunteers) always regaled us with wonderful stories that always brought a smile, laugh or even a roll of the eyes! His stories always demonstrated a love of life and a life well lived. Cheers to that! A kind, unselfish and caring individual that will truly be missed. I am blessed to have shared time with him as an AARP volunteer. May fond memories help you through this difficult time.

Dear Peterson Family...Charlie and I are both so saddened to hear of Byrons' passing. Byron was always that bright ray of sunshine anytime we would see him at BCC, his smile was infectious. Such a kind soul who will be sorely missed by all, but I will always look at that spot at the pool where he and your mom always were and be thankful I knew him, but miss him terribly just the same. Jane, all the girls are sending our best to you, our friend, as you navigate through the days ahead. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all...may all the happy memories bring you smiles...........
