Berta -- Mrs. Rodriguez -- was a beautiful, open and lovely woman who adored her family. I met her once, a long time ago, at a Gala in New York. I sat next to her. She was the type of person that exuded love -- she made me feel like we were old friends -- we talked and laughed and shared how we felt about this and that. She was lovely! It was one of the best formal Gala I attended because I had spent some time with an old friend and an old soul. My deepest condolences to the family -- she loved you.

My heart is broken with the unexpected loss of Tia Berta. I always felt blessed on having an aunt and uncle like Tia Berta & Marcos. When I came from Cuba in 1983, Tia and Marcos opened their doors to me and made me feel as if I was one of their own children. Throughout the years Tia became not just a mother-like figure but my friend and confidant. The one that I would go to for advice. Tia and Marcos have always been a model of excellence for the upcoming generations. Tia was a magnificent wife, mother, grandmother, sister and a spectacular aunt. I will miss my Tia and will always have a special place for her in my heart. Rest in peace Tia.

I am sending my deepest condolences to the entire family. I had the honor of knowing Mrs. Rodriguez through Marcos (Jr.), one the wonderful children she raised and my high school and college classmate, Philadelphia roommate and best man. I have special memories of Mrs. Rodriguez “hosting” ornery high school seniors at the New Jersey house after they and Marcos spent a night out on the town. Loving acceptance and homecooked breakfast in the morning to boot. Rest in peace, Mrs. Rodriguez.

My dearest cousins, we are all shocked by your Mom's sudden passing. But the Lord has rewarded her and has now received her into His arms. I knew Bertica all my life, literally since I was born, since she lived right across the street from me in Babes and would often babysit me. Imagine, she was 16 at the time! But our relationship went much deeper, since she married my first cousin Marcos, Marquitin as many in the family call him, and because she played a crucial role in my life. I'll explain. It was Spring break of my freshman year in college that Bertica and Marquitin accepted me a few days into their Washington Heights apartment. Mandy had just been born. On Marquitin's day off he took me to the top of the Empire State building, I recall. And Bertica was working at a pharmacy down the street from the apartment at the corner with Broadway, while at night she was attending classes in order to get her NY pharmacist license. At home in the apartment Marquitin would cook. In those few days I was able to observe the family dynamics and soon realized that when the time came for me to choose a life partner, I would marry a girl who, like Bertica, would "pull the cart" along with me; that would be my equal when it came to family and home affairs. What I'm saying is that Bertica was a role model for me. Luckily, I found that girl and married her, had a family, succeeded together, travelled together, loved and lived and cried together. That's what your mom meant to me. I loved her dearly. And I love you all, Rodri

I met Berta when I was a young man. Watching her strength and devotion to family, values and doing the right thing impacted my value system much as my own mother did. I'm grateful to have been included in her wonderful life and the amazing legacy she leaves behind in her children and all she knew.
