Obituary of Stephen A. Swatt

Stephen Andrew Swatt Jr, age 66, of Bridgeport, passed away suddenly on September 23, 2018.  Steve was the son of Stephen A. Sr. and Gizella Swatt. Steve was predeceased by his brother Gerold (2002).

Steve had a talent for many things, but those who knew him know that his true passion was to help others.  He gave of his time, energy, and talents to everyone he touched. His love was boundless. As friends reflect on Steve’s life, the outpouring of love and affection demonstrates how powerful a friendship with Steve could be. Even the most honest of his friend's reflections comes from a place of love and admiration; “Steve was the kindest curmudgeon I ever knew”.

Steve shared his love through his work.  With what was undoubtedly the best work ethic anyone has ever seen, he assisted anyone who asked with carpentry or handy-work around their home. He would neglect his own needs regularly to help others.  As a manager for the Nutmeg/Cinema National/Loews/Sony Theater corporations Steve was gentle and methodical. He started working as a kid (at his mother’s heel) at the Community Theater in Fairfield and ended his movie theater career as the Managing Director of a multi-million dollar Sony/Loews Multiplex in Danbury CT.  Not only did he run the Danbury theater, but he was on the team that supervised its construction.

Steve transitioned from film to live theater seamlessly.  He was a Master Carpenter at the Gateway Candlewood Playhouse in New Fairfield until its closing, and then moved to The Downtown Cabaret Theater in Bridgeport. To label him as just a carpenter would be a gross understatement. Steve was a true renaissance man doing whatever was required to ensure that the show went up.  His fingerprints were on every set as well as the facilities where those shows were performed.

Steve would be shocked by the number of people who are mourning his loss and that is a testament to his humility, humanity, and impact on those he touched.  He will be missed.
