I met Margie when my father, Larry Shire, began teaching at Mill Hill. She became such a special friend and source of support in my life, always celebrating my every accomplishment and providing genuine comfort and non-judgement during times of struggle and sadness. When I moved back home after college I loved joining Margie, my dad, and a few other retired teacher friends for weekend morning walks by St. Mary’s. I feel so grateful that I was able to introduce my baby daughter Sabine to Margie during my last trip to CT almost exactly 3 years ago. She was proud of me as always to see me in my new role as a mother, and I am so proud to have been her friend. Her warmth and love will never ever be forgotten.

Mrs. Betts was my tutor from when I was six years old until I graduated high school. I was lucky enough to keep in touch with her and build a relationship with her as an adult as well. Mrs Betts was kind, creative, loving, and she saw a light in me as a student that helped me find my path.
Her and I used to meet at the Pequot library in Southport every Wednesday after school. She taught me to read and helped me get the services I needed in school to help me grow.
Mrs. Betts got to know me and tailored every lesson, homework, and project to fit my needs until I was eighteen. The things she taught me I still carry with me today and use in my own classroom. Her influence on my teaching is strong and I feel like I am just like her. I find myself laughing every time I do something she would do that used to drive me crazy when I was her student.
The pictures listed are from the story “Thank you Mr. Falker” by Patricia Polacco . She told me this book reminded her of the two of us. It was about a struggling learner. The little girl in the story learns to love her differences because of the teacher Mr. Falker who sees potential and pushes her. This story always stuck with me and I thought of myself as the girl, and and her as Mr. Falker.
This morning I read this story to my first grade class. I had to stop on this page while reading because I thought of her. The day she read this story to me Mrs Betts stopped on this page and said that one day she will be watching me from the stars telling me I can do it, I can read. I feel her watching me encouraging my now career as a first grade teacher, spreading knowledge and continuing all she taught me. I told the same thing to my students that she told me. "Knowledge is power, and reading is power. If you can read, you can do anything."
Mrs. Betts made me the teacher I am today. She will always be an important person in my life, who taught me so many lessons I will always remember.
“[Honey is sweet] and so is knowledge, but knowledge is like the bee that made that sweet honey, you have to chase it through the pages of a book.”
― Patricia Polacco, Thank You, Mr. Falker

I was an elementary school (Brookside) and high school classmate of Margie's at Brien McMahon. We were friends from 60 years ago, and reconnected at BMHS's 50th Reunion in 2013. I'm so happy that I got to have lunch with her a number of times in the years after the reunion, and will miss her a lot. She truly was a special person. Sending her whole family my deepest condolences.

I first met Margie when she worked for Trillium Publishing and later on worked with her when she taught Grade 4 at Mill Hill School. We spent many a February vacation in beautiful St. Maarten — so many laughs and good times! I will treasure those memories forever.
You will be missed, My Friend! May you now Rest In Peace. Fondly, Donna Coble

Our hearts are broken over Margie's passing. She was a very special part of our family and mentored and taught all three of our children at Mill Hill School. For many years she attended all of our youngest performances and remained a dear friend. We pray that she is resting comfortably and at peace.
