William is my uncle once or twice removed from somewhere in Salt Lake City and once in Malibu. I came to Hollywood in 1981 and tried to be an actor. I called Bill from my place in Malibu at County Line. "Oh you're in Malibu," he said. "Don't get into this field—go back to Oregon," he said. I stayed for nine years. I wish I had called him again. I think I did. He was gruff. I wish I had made a better connection with him. I never saw his soft spot. Maybe he did not have one... RIP Tom od the the Harbach clan.

My heart goes out to your family. I am so sorry that you are going through this difficult time. Psalms 46:1 says, God is our refuge and strength, a help that is readily found in times of distress. And remember that God hates it when one of His children dies (Matthew 18:14, 1 Corinthians 15:26). So He makes Himself available in order to comfort us. In fact, 2 Corinthians 1:3, 4 refers to Him as the "God of all comfort". Pray to Him for strength to get through this most difficult time. Weep to Him when the words just won't come out. He will really help you (Isaiah 41:10) because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). And please, call upon His name found at Psalm 83:18. www.JW.org

Bill was one great guy. Always loved to see him pull up in front of my studio with Emmy his beloved dog. First words out of his mouth usually were "HEY KIDDO"! I always enjoyed our time together and hearing all the stories he had to tell. He was a treasure and I'm so glad I got to know him. Rest well my friend. You will be missed.

When I think of Billy, I have a feeling that many share who loved him but difficult to put into words. Billy and Barbara's own words will say it best - 'He’s a Giant!'
Barbara’s often included the following words in her annual birthday toasts to Billy –
‘Billy is not a man who puts out another man's candle to make his shine brighter’
That just about says it all.
I'v always admired Billy for the sheer goodness, warmth and joy that he always “brought to the party” and for the deep love and adoration that he had for his father. I found that so endearing and knew that in Billy’s case ‘the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree’. I didn't have the privilege of meeting Otto, but knew that I would have seen so much of that great man in Billy.
The apple did not fall from the tree in other ways as well…..
Many of us were dubbed ‘What’s his / her name'?! Billy loved to tell the story of a particular lunch with his father in the studio cafeteria, when Carey Grant came to the table to greet Otto, having been in one of Otto’s plays. After Carey walked away, Otto leaned across the table and asked ‘What’s his name?!’
Billy may not have known our names, but he knew and loved what shines in each of us.

My earliest emory of Uncle Bill was a summer day at the Big House in Mamaroneck. when I was about 8. I was alone, with all of Otto's books and music, just hanging around waiting for my Uncle Bill. Ella & Otto, Alice & Bern. the cook, Linda & Me. Finally, we heard the engine, the gravel spraying all around, and there he was: the red MG convertible, a very, very handsome, tall man with a shock of blond hair, a beautiful lady - and then the 2 Siamese cats appeared right out of the glove box. WOW! what an entrance. What a dazzling uncle we had!!
And that sense of intuitive, innate glamour and style has been with me all my life. Bill was the energy that kept both Otto and my dad engaged for so long at the end. He was such a great story teller. And, of course, the Laugh. I think Uncles (& Aunts) have a funny way of influencing us, they are at once so distant, but so real, - and so different from one's parents. So from the start, my uncle Bill gave me a different idea of how to live,, how life could be. Thanks largely to Barbara, we saw a fair amount of them. Funniest damn trip to the Caribbean , wonderful listening to Buddy Rich, Newport on the ZOOMAR. Dinners in Fairfield, oh, it was all wonderful. Miss him? oh, yes. Loved him with all my grateful heart. -Penny

Billy used to say about performers he produced, “He (she) was a giant!” Actually, Billy was the giant. He had a positive way with people that brought out the best in them and created a lasting bond. He was interesting, funny, thoughtful, and caring and had a commanding presence whether at a cocktail party or piloting the Zoomar. Nancy and I spent many delightful hours in the den enjoying replays of his Hollywood Palace and reveled in Billy’s comments on what went on behind-the-scenes. We shared a love of jazz and one night at the Blue Note he introduced me to Buddy Rich, an event that remains indelible in my mind. I will miss Billy’s exuberance, sense of fun, and warm friendship. As he would say when looking back over his star-studded life, “It’s been a hell of a party!”. Yes it has, Billy, and were glad we could share it with you.

Billy,
I miss you every single day. Thank you for being my second dad. I am who I am today because of you. Thank you for believing in me, encouraging me and most of all loving me as your own. I will carry the gifts you bestowed upon me until we meet again. Say hi to Mom for me. My world is a less funnier place without you in it. Thank you for your gift of laughter. There was so much laughter in our household these close to 40 years. You were the Captain of humor ... your laugh is one of my favorites sounds. I love you Billy and will keep you in my heart from here on. xoxox

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship by my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze, and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch, until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone by my side says; "There! She's gone"; "Gone where"? "Gone from my sight-that is all".

I have such fond memories of your father!
I blame him for my love of boats. He got me started on my lifelong addiction to the damn things:)
In California he’d take me to Marina Del Rey and teach me boat stuff. Later I was invited on the Firefly for a few NYYC cruises....wonderful memories I will always cherish.
Bill was always great fun to be around and brightened every room he walked in to.
I will miss both Bill and Barbara a great deal.

Dear Daddy,
I am so proud to be one of your daughters. You were always loving and enthusiastic. Thank you for teaching me all those college fight songs. And I treasure the time you spent with me aboard the Firefly and the Zoomar. I wish you love always and forever,
Lisa Peesa, over and out.
