Jan Charles "Chuck" Sabol Jr., 81, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026.

He was born in Bridgeport on August 2, 1945, to Mary and John Sabol. Chuck enlisted in the Navy in 1963 and served on the USS Harwood (DD-861). He was immensely proud of his service, which took him around the world, including the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. He loved recalling his trip to Oslo, Norway, on June 21, 1964, when he stayed up past 2:00 a.m. to see the sun that never set, and how he crossed the equator on the way to Mombasa, Kenya. After transferring to the Naval Reserve in 1966, Chuck returned home to Bridgeport, where he met his wife, Judy. He received an honorable discharge in 1969 along with the National Defense Service Medal. Chuck and Judy married in 1970, and they were blessed to spend nearly 60 wonderful years together.

Chuck earned a bachelor's degree from Monmouth University in New Jersey and later completed master's degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Bridgeport and Sacred Heart University. Building on his Navy engineering training, he went on to enjoy a fulfilling career at Pitney Bowes in Stamford and then Sikorsky Aircraft.

As a member of Toastmasters International, Chuck loved to enthusiastically regale everyone with his hilarious stories, especially a favorite childhood memory involving buttered toast. Above all, he cherished his family. He never missed his daughter's dance performances and could always be seen filming them with his giant video camera. He also loved heading to Mets games with his son, no matter how rough the season was.

Chuck was an active member of the Fairfield Gaelic American Club, where he learned to play the tin whistle with the Shamrogues. He celebrated his Irish roots with a memorable 2015 trip to Ireland that included kissing the Blarney Stone. Chuck was guided by his faith, and he was a devoted parishioner at St. Patrick's Church in Bridgeport.

Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; his daughter, Krissy (Tim); his son, Rob (Jenn); his two cherished grandchildren, Claire and Calder; and his brother, John (Pat). To honor his proud naval heritage, Chuck will be buried at sea in a U.S. Navy ceremony. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
