John F. Hanley, 74, passed away on Sunday, June 14 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

John was born in New York City on September 16, 1951, the son of Francis and Dorothy (McKenna) Hanley.

The family settled in Norwalk and John graduated from Norwalk High School in 1970 and later graduated from Norwalk Tech. John became a draftsman/instrument design engineer and worked for several chemical and pharmaceutical companies throughout the Tri-State area. John designed safety equipment for these companies that dealt with toxic chemicals. To date, none of his safety equipment has failed and he has saved many lives that could have been lost if not for his safety equipment designs.

When John retired in his 50s, he delved into his artistic talents and became a local Black Rock artist known for his lighthouse series and magnificent cartoon cards which brought a smile to those who received his birthday greetings and get-well cards.

John is survived by his longtime partner Cynthia Reiss as well as his sister Dorothy (Dot) Hanley of California, brother Tom Hanley of Philadelphia, nieces Claire and Tricia, nephew Trevor, grandnieces Evangeline and Fiona and grandnephews Ronin, Colin, Lincoln, Liam and Everett as well as many McKenna cousins.

A memorial service will be held at Lesko Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, Fairfield, Connecticut on Saturday, July 18th, 2026, at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, feel free to make a donation to your favorite charity.
