Patricia Byrne Powers Obituary
Patricia Byrne Powers, formerly of Weston CT, passed away peacefully on March 3 surrounded by her loving family.
To the many who knew and loved her, she was affectionately referred to as “Patty P”, a name so beloved that even her children adopted it. And to her husband Jim, she was always Pretty Patty Powers. She lived a dynamic life as a devoted wife, mother of six, entrepreneur, volunteer, and beloved friend. Known for her warmth, creativity, and legendary hospitality, Patty had a gift for bringing people together and building community wherever she lived—from New York City to Weston, Connecticut, and Nantucket—leaving an enduring legacy of generosity, style, and spirited living.
Born December 28, 1935, in Rochester, New York, to John and Dorothy Byrne, Patricia graduated from Mercy High School and moved to New York City at 18 to attend the Tobe-Coburn School for Fashion. She began a career in fashion merchandising and embraced life in 1950’s Manhattan with enthusiasm and panache.
She cherished her memories of that era — evenings at the Stork Club and life in Greenwich Village — but most importantly, it was where she met the love of her life, James Beston Powers. Though they formally met at a party, Jim had already noticed Patty at their local Catholic church — "the girl in the blue hat".
They married on February 8, 1958, beginning their life together in Mount Vernon, then Norwalk, CT, before settling in Weston, where they raised their six children. The Powers household was lively, busy, and often chaotic – an eight-person symphony of activity. Family dinners were sacred and memorable; filled with laughter, lively debate, and the unmistakable warmth of a mother who made everyone feel welcome at her table. Patty P poured herself into her family and community with boundless energy.
Education and adventure were woven into the Powers’ family life. During school vacations, Patty would load the children into the Ford LTD station wagon and head off to Williamsburg, Gettysburg, or Amish country for immersive history lessons. When the family discovered skiing, many winter weekends were spent at Stratton Mountain in VT. Even on the slopes, her spirit of service endured — once serving as an official at the 1978 World Cup.
Patty and Jim were both exceptional cooks, and their home became a beloved weekend gathering place. Friends jokingly called it “Grand Central Station” or the “Drive-In Cooking School,” dropping by in hopes of enjoying one of Jim’s legendary hero sandwiches or a bowl of Patty’s homemade soup. Patty refined her culinary skills at La Varenne in Paris and later led girls’ get-away cooking trips to France.
After one too many requests to “bring that dish again,” what began as cooking for friends’ milestone birthdays and business gatherings, eventually grew into a thriving catering business, Country Cuisine and Flowers. Never one to do things halfway, Patty also earned a Floral Design Certificate from the New York Botanical Garden, often providing both cuisine and floral design services for clients’ events. Her kitchen became something of a training ground and employment agency for Weston teenagers, many of whom worked under her guidance and carried her lessons far beyond their time there.
A pioneer in creative entertaining and home styling, Patty embraced and embodied “homemade” long before DIY became fashionable. Nothing in the Powers household was boxed or store-bought if she could make it herself. She sewed smocked dresses and coats for her daughters, crafted elaborate Halloween costumes, and designed handcrafted holiday decorations. Her Christmas decorations — both indoor and outdoor— were legendary. During her first year as a CT resident, she inadvertently won “Best Display - Residential” in the Town of Norwalk’s Holiday Home Decor Contest.
Besides her family and her entrepreneurial endeavors, she poured energy into her community. She served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, a dedicated member of the Weston Garden Club - where she started the planting of the town’s community pots, a member of the League of Women Voters who faithfully worked the voting booths every Election Day, and as a volunteer at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital Thrift Shop. For twenty years, she served as a volunteer EMT with the Weston Fire Department, a role she carried out with pride and compassion.
One of Patty’s most meaningful contributions was founding a group called the SOLOs — a social network for widows, divorcees, and single women of a certain age. What began as a small gathering grew into a vibrant community with a printed directory, officers, and regular events: Tuesday night tacos at the beach, restaurant outings, movies, plays, store openings and monthly dinners in members’ homes. Through it, Patty created friendship, laughter, community and for many a new lease on life.
In addition to her family, she had a life-long love affair with Nantucket. One of her greatest joys was spending summers on Nantucket with her family for nearly 40 years.
The sheer volume of what she accomplished would be remarkable for anyone. That she did it all while raising six children is extraordinary.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James Beston Powers. She is survived by her six children: Susan O’Leary (Richard) and their children Ryan (Julia), Caleigh, and Brittany; Julia Killian (Gary) and their children Alexandra Berlan (Zachary), Connor (Adelia), Tucker, Macguire, and Shane Killian; Byrne Powers; Lulu Powers Danelian (Steve); Sarah Powers; and Molly Powers and her children Quinn, Birch, and Cooper. Her three great-grandchildren Madeline and Catherine Killian and Nicholas Berlan were the apples of her eye and brought her much joy in her last years.
Patty P leaves a legacy of service, creativity, resilience, and fierce love. Her kitchen was her canvas, her community her calling, and her family her proudest achievement. Patty’s life was beautifully lived – generously, energetically, and always with unmistakable style.
