Evelyne Bisack Obituary

Evelyne S. Bisack, devoted wife of John H. Bisack II (deceased), passed peacefully surrounded by family on October 29, 2025 at age 94. She was the daughter of Franz J. Scheitz and Ida Trautmann Scheitz of Breslau, Germany (currently Wroclaw Poland). Evelyne was a child of World War II and often said, "I hope the Russian soldier who spared my family had a good life."

the eldest of five young siblings living at home, Evelyne went to work to help support the family as soon as the war was over. She became an accomplished seamstress, worked as a governess for a U.S. family, and taught herself English. While managing the international counter on the U.S. base, she met her future husband John. She arrived in the U.S. in 1956 and lived in Detroit with her younger sister Helga and brother-in-law, while working as a bank teller. She was in line for promotion to bank manager when Evelyne and John decided to marry.

Evelyne and John then moved to New York City, where their daughter Kathryn Bisack was born and simultaneously became a U.S. citizen. They welcomed their son John H. Bisack III in Fairfield, Connecticut. After spending several years at home caring for her children, she returned to work part-time at Trumbull Mall Read's Department Store to save for trips back to Germany and to get out of the house. She considered herself a city girl. The store eventually became Macy's; Evelyne worked there for 30 years or more until she retired. One of Evelyne's favorite Macy's counters was "Crabtree and Evelyne" where she could laugh with her co-sales friend "I'm Evelyne and she's the crab".

Evelyne is described by friends and family as caring, smart, intuitive, inclusive, an incredible chef, and so welcoming in her home to all. She became "Oma" to many within and beyond her own family circle. Evelyne often shared how grateful she was for a pair of red shoes she received in a post-war care package and became a local Fairfield volunteer sending care packages to U.S. personnel abroad, often including a bit of makeup for women soldiers. She was also a long-time member of the Fairfield Women's Club.

She is survived by daughter Kathryn of North Falmouth MA, son John and daughter-in-law Michelle previously of Fairfield, grandchildren Amanda Bisack Caputo and her husband Richard of Port Jefferson Long Island, Tyler Bisack and wife Allie from Fairfield CT, Brandon Bisack of Manhattan NY and Max Rafferty of North Falmouth MA; great grandchildren Gianna, Joseph and Milania Bisack, and Callie Caputo expected in December; brother Hartmut Scheitz of Waldbrunn Germany and sister-in-law Christa Scheitz of Fleischmann, New York. She is

predeceased by her husband and siblings Gunter Schietz, Helga Lawhead, Eberhard Scheitz, and Inge Sachs.

There will be a memorial service at Stepney Baptist Church on April 25, 2026, with the specific times to be announced later. For travel directions or to sign her online guest register, please visit www.LeskoFuneralHome.com.
